Injury Prevention
UNM Health System is your partner in preventing injury—the leading cause of death and disability for children, teens and young adults. As New Mexico’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, we are a leader in accident prevention.
Community Programs & Services
ThinkFirst Injury Prevention for Youth
Each year hundreds of New Mexico children learn how to make safe choices through the ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation. UNM nurses lead the ThinkFirst New Mexico chapter in Albuquerque and ThinkFirst SRMC in Rio Rancho:
- Albuquerque: Email Helen Sisneros, RN
- Rio Rancho: Email Heather Ouellette, RN
Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention
UNM staff teach parents and caregivers to safely calm a crying infant. We can bring our shaken baby syndrome prevention presentation to your school, health care facility or family service program.
School, Group & Community Presentations
Our team visits classrooms and youth organizations, such as the Boys & Girls Club, to give engaging, age-appropriate presentations. Popular topics include:
- Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety
- How the Brain and Spine Work
- Playground and Sports Safety
- Vehicle and Bus Safety
- Violence Prevention
- Water Safety
We are also happy to join community health and safety fairs as presenters or booth representatives.
